This handout discusses the writing obstacles most frequently faced by beginning poets and fiction writers and will offer tactics for addressing these issues during a tutorial. The term metaphor meant in Greek "carry something across" or "transfer," which suggests many of the more elaborate definitions below:. People get so accustomed to using the same words and phrases over and over, and always in the same ways, that they no longer know what they mean.
Creative writers have the power to make the ordinary strange and the strange ordinary, making life interesting again. When readers or listeners encounter a phrase or word that cannot be interpreted literally, they have to think—or rather, they are given the pleasure of interpretation. If you write "I am frustrated" or "The air was cold" you give your readers nothing to do—they say "so what?
By writing "my dorm is a prison," you suggest to your readers that you feel as though you were placed in solitary, you are fed lousy food, you are deprived of all of life's great pleasures, your room is poorly lit and cramped—and a hundred other things, that, if you tried to say them all, would probably take several pages. There are many gaps in language. When a child looks at the sky and sees a star but does not know the word "star," she is forced to say, "Mommy, look at the lamp in the sky!
In your poems, you will often be trying to write about subjects, feelings, etc. Or so says Aristotle in Poetics: "[T]he greatest thing by far is to be a master of metaphor. Most books give rather boring examples of metaphors such as my father is a bear or the librarian was a beast.
However, in your poetry and fiction for that matter you can do much more than say X is Y, like an algebraic formula. Definitely play with extended metaphors see above and experiment with some of the following, using metaphors Using Metaphors in Creative Writing Summary: This handout discusses the writing obstacles most frequently faced by beginning poets and fiction writers and will offer tactics for addressing these issues during a tutorial.

Only when the learning is able to master this basic information movement to a different stage becomes possible. It is like a stage process, building on knowledge at each stage as you move on.

I am a teacher like a salmon returning home from the ocean. With me I carry an over powering instinct to return to the waters where I was born no matter what the cost. I will struggle with predators, obstacles, and above all, the current of the river. I must overcome these challenges.
The future of my race depends on my survival. I must complete my journey. The challenges ahead begin immediately. My first struggle is with the unpredictable currents of the river. These currents are dangerously tricky. One minute they will push me toward the bank of the river where hostile animals wait to pluck me from the water. Within a few hundred feet the currents become calm and smooth.
It is easy to push upstream in the slow moving water. However, danger still lurks from the banks of the river and the sky. Now the river has become fast and rough. The white water rapids force me to push forward up the river or lose my ground and begin again. I muster my strength and push closure toward my ultimate goal. The white water leads me to the hardest obstacle I have had to face, the dam.
The mass placed between me and my home waters must be overcome. Determined not to fail I utilize the tools my allies have provided to climb up the dam to the other side. If this fails I contact my fellow salmon to help me find a way around the large obstacle. I repeat this process many times on the way home. Yet that is pretty much what happens when learners walked into most classroom environments. The mystery of life is purposefully removed in something called "curriculum" or "syllabus".
Too bad! Raku is so much different. Though there is a lot of learning involved - with the clay, with the glazes, with the firing - the combinations of everything, including the very mixture of air with everything else, is completely impossible to control perfectly.
And giving up the control of it is a large part of what makes it so wonder-full! Like each child, each piece of pottery is a unique individual unique in the sense of special , not pure! Even within the same classroom or same Raku kiln, nothing comes out the same. A teacher can no more treat each learner as the same as others as a potter can treat each ceramic ware as the same as others. Have a look at these 4 pieces of tile that I created, that were fired together and you'll have some idea about mystery and surprise and the loveliness of Raku, of children and of learning!
